Average typing speed by age

Typing speed rises through childhood, plateaus in adulthood at whatever technique a person settled on, and declines far less with age than people assume. Here are the typical ranges by age group, and why the numbers look the way they do.

What the ranges show

The table below gives typical net WPM ranges for each age group on ordinary prose. They are broad because the spread within any age is far larger than the difference between ages: a twelve-year-old who has been taught touch typing will outtype most adults who never were. The single biggest predictor of typing speed is not age but whether the person learned a system.

The ranges are drawn from published keyboarding-education benchmarks and general-population test data; individual tests vary in length and text, so treat them as orientation rather than norms.

Children and teenagers

Keyboarding instruction typically starts between the ages of eight and eleven, and schools set targets of roughly 15 to 20 WPM by the end of primary school and 30 to 40 by early secondary. Children who practise regularly reach adult average speeds by fourteen or fifteen; those who learned hunt-and-peck first take longer, because they are unlearning as well as learning. Hand size matters less than it seems — the reach across a standard keyboard is manageable from about age seven.

Adults

Working adults who use a keyboard daily average around 40 WPM, and the number is remarkably stable from the twenties through the fifties. It is a plateau of habit rather than ability: speed stops improving when a person stops learning, which for most is the moment their typing became good enough for the job. Adults who take up touch typing, at any age, typically add fifteen to twenty-five words per minute within a few months.

Older adults

Typing is a well-practised motor skill, and well-practised motor skills hold up. Studies of older typists find that experienced typists in their sixties and seventies keep most of their speed, partly by reading further ahead in the text to compensate for slightly slower key presses. Accuracy often improves. The declines that do appear are more about vision and posture than about the hands, and the same ergonomic fixes that help younger typists help here too.
